7. Pathways Within College
Pathways within college: diplomas, one year certificates, apprenticeship training, articulation agreements, college degrees
Using ontariocolleges.ca andgeorgiancollege.ca as resources, each group researches the following elements of their pathway:
Duration of the pathway (how long will it take to finish?)
Estimated cost of the pathway
Three examples of the type of programs they can take within the pathway
Students write their ideas down on their worksheet and then each group shares their summary with the class.
There are five common pathways within college: apprenticeship, college diplomas, college degrees, one year certificates and articulation agreements. Each of these pathways within the college system can lead students to where they want to go.
At Georgian College, for example, the Credit Transfer Centre works together with academic areas and other postsecondary institutions to grant course exemptions to students based on their past coursework and/or previous life and learning experience. This falls under the “articulation agreements” pathway.
Some colleges also now offer their own degrees, as well as undergraduate and graduate degrees with a growing number of partner institutions so that students can get a university degree while attending college. This falls under the “college degrees” pathway.

Find a dual credit(s) that is of interest to you and list on your group worksheet
Students will be able to identify whether a dual credit exists for the program area they identified in the Reflection section of the lesson. Dual credits are offered to senior students who are disengaged and underachieving but who have the potential to succeed and allows participants to earn a college credit and a secondary credit by taking one college course, usually on the campus of the college (some dual credits are taught at the home school).
Students in OYAP and/or an SHSM are also eligible to participate in dual credit.
Dual credits allow students to “sample” college while still in highschool.
