Effects of Smokeless Tobacco
Entry – Smokeless tobacco mixes with saliva. Some is spit out, some is absorbed through the lining of the mouth. The rest goes through the stomach and the intestines into the bloodstream. Short term effects – Decreases sense of smell and taste. Dental problems. Receding gums. Bad breath. Discolored teeth. Long term effects – the chemicals irritate the tissues of the mouth. White leathery patches called leukoplakia may form where the tobacco is placed. This can lead to cancer of the mouth.

Heart Disease Smokeless tobacco causes similar effects as those seen in smoking Increase in heart rate (30% higher) Increase in blood pressure Less cardiovascular risk than smoking possibly due to lack of carbon monoxide and related compounds
