1 2.3: Population Dynamics and Succession

2 Key Terms Population Dynamics
Study of why populations change and what causes them to change Carrying Capacity The maximum number of individuals an environment can support

3 Three Stages of Population Change
Growth The population increases in size. There are more births than deaths. Stability The population does not change size. The number of births and deaths is equal. Decline The population decreases in size. There are more deaths than births.

4 Three Stages of Population Change
Population Growth Graph Transition Stability Growth

5 Growth Terms Emigration Movement of individuals out of a population
Immigration Movement of individuals into a population Limiting Factor A factor that prevents the continuing growth of a population within an environment

6 Limiting Factors: Abiotic
Wind Temperature Moisture/Rainfall Light Soil Drought, Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Fires, Floods

7 Limiting Factors: Biotic
Bacteria Plants Fungi Animals Decomposers Disease, Parasitism, Predation, Competition
