Social Security What is it?
Created in 1935 during the Great Depression to assist people during retirement as well as with disabilities. How does it work? Workers pay a % of their salary while they work and receive a monthly stipend if they retire or become disabled.

Social Security Today Today, Social Security is actually a number of programs, the most important is a retirement program.

Medicare What it is Hospital care for elderly
Care for those who are disabled How does it work? Through taxes taken out of your paycheck.

Unemployment Compensation
What is it? Created during The Great Depression (1930s) to assist those without work Those who are unemployed looking for work How does it work State pays a stipend from tax money in order to help those in search of job

Food Stamps (in Maryland: Food Supplement Program)
A program that gives government vouchers to those on low income to be exchanged for food

Medicaid What it does This program provides money to states to help pay the medical costs of people with low incomes.

Temp. Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
provides temporary financial assistance for pregnant women and families with one or more dependent children. TANF provides financial assistance to help pay for food, shelter, utilities, and expenses other than medical. State sets guidelines for who qualifies
