4 The New World Columbus Line of Demarcation- line of longitude that divided lands claimed by Spain & Portugal John Cabot- explored New England coastline for England Amerigo Vespucci- America was named after him Spain- settled Central America & parts of South America

5 Important Terms Mercantilism- economic principle that held that the prosperity of a nation depended on a large supply of gold & silver Colonies- a settlement of people living in a new territory, linked with the parent country by trade and government control Balance of trade- the difference in value of imports & exports

6 Trade, Colonies, & Mercantilism
Portugal, Spain, and other European nations set up trading posts & colonies in the New World & in the east. This sent Europe into the Commercial Revolution. Countries wanted to bring in money (gold/silver) because of the belief in mercantilism- that their prosperity depended on it
