Getting an overview ‘Severe depression prevails. Financial worries make all systematic work impossible. The danger now exists of the whole Party going to pieces. Dr Ley phones that the situation is critical from hour to hour. For hours on end the Fuhrer walks anxiously up and down the hotel room. Once he stops, he says “ If the Party should ever break up, I’ll make an end of things in three minutes with a revolver.” Extract from Goebbals’ diary, 8th Dec 1932. Look at the timeline on pages 46 and 47 and consider these points: Can you see how the Nazis were able to exploit the confusion in the Reichstag? Can you see what problems PR have caused? Why do you think the Nazi vote dropped in 1932?
