Key words Ethics – a system of moral principles. They affect how people make decisions and lead their lives. Situation Ethics – ethical decisions that follow flexible guidelines rather than absolute rules, and be taken on a case by case basis Utilitarianism – An ethical philosophy in which the happiness of the greatest number of people in the society is considered the greatest good. Protection – an aim of punishment that provides safety for society. Deterrence – to prevent someone from committing crime or re-committing crime. Reformation – To reform / change someone from bad to good. Retribution – To gain revenge through punishment.
