Neutralization Acids & Bases SNC2D
2
Lets see what you know... 1. Give an example of an acid found in something you eat. 2. What is the environment inside your stomach? 3. A pH scale goes from ____ to _____ 4. Acids have a pH _______ than 7 5. Bases have a pH of ______ to ________
3
Lets see what you know... 6. A substance with a pH of 7 like water is called ____________ 7. Acids have lots of ________ ions present 8. Bases have lots of ______ ions present
4
The Coke Can vs. Acids / Bases
5
Remember this? Oxyacids:
hydrogen is attached to a polyatomic ion that contains oxygen e.g. phosphate (PO43-) would give us phosphoric acid (H3PO4)
6
Success Criteria Students will:
Be able to classify reactions as neutralization by recognizing reactants as acid and base Be able to predict the products of neutralization reactions.
7
Neutralization Reactions
Neutralization reactions Involve reacting an acid with a base to produce a solution that has a pH that is somewhere between what the 2 originally were. (usually the halfway point between the 2 pH’s on the pH scale is a general way to figure out the pH of the final solution.)
8
Neutralization Reactions
When an acid and base react, your products are: Acid + Base Salt + Water Eg. HCl + NaOH Ionic Compound
