Political Regions pg A political region is an area of land where the people are ruled under one government This can also be called a country or a nation The world’s largest political region or nation in area is Russia, it covers more than 6.5 million square miles The world’s smallest political region or nation in area is Vatican City, which is 1/6th of a square mile

Political Regions pg 76 - 78 Most borders are invisible lines
Border – a line that divides one nation from another nation Most borders are invisible lines like the border of the United States and Canada Some borders are based on physical features of the land like part of the border of Mexico and the U.S.A. that follows the Rio Grande river.

Political Regions pg Empire – an area consisting of many lands that have come under the control of one ruler During ancient times powerful civilizations built great empires ex: Roman, Aztecs, England, Spanish By conquering new lands each empire grew in size and power and expanded its borders

Political Regions pg Colony – an area of land ruled by a government in another land The United States was originally 13 English colonies After a colony begins to rule itself or breaks away from the original country their borders usually remain unchanged

Political Regions pg Sub-regions – smaller divisions inside a larger region Not only nations but also areas within nations can be political regions In the United States we have sub-regions called states within the nation of the United States In each state there are state laws as well as national laws that each citizen must follow States can be divided into even smaller sub-regions that include cities, towns, counties, or parishes

Cultural Regions pg Cultural regions – regions that are divided by their shared culture traits Cultural regions can be shown on maps and can show a regions shared language or religion for example Like political regions, cultural regions can change over time due to the movement of people from one place to another

Economic Regions pg Economic regions are generally broken into two different types, developing and developed nations They can be further broken down based on the industries that are present in the nation: Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, and Quaternary They can also go as far as being grouped based on what the major item produced or major economic activities in the area are The economic activity that a certain area has gives the people a common bond and makes the region different from other regions
