2 WHAT IS A LITERARY MOVEMENT?
Broadly defined, literary movements are trends within literary periods in which literature is unified by shared intellectual, linguistic, religious, and artistic influences. Books written during the same time frame that share common elements like structure, wording, beliefs, and reasons for writing.

3 WHY ARE LITERARY MOVEMENTS IMPORTANT?
They help us: understand the author’s purpose for writing. discover and understand the themes of the story/poem. analyze the use of literary devices. find a group of writing that we like to read.

5 BASIS OF ROMANTICISM The individual wants to figure out who they are, why they are here, and what is important. No longer tied to religious beliefs Really liked nature Looked at people’s emotions– especially fear, sorrow, and imagination

What we learn about the character’s personality and motivations throughout the story/poem Foreshadowing Hints and clues to suggest what is going to happen next

11 POINT OF VIEW The vantage point from which the author tells the story
First person: one of the characters tells the story. Third person: an unknown narrator tells the story.

12 SYMBOL A person, place, or thing that has a meaning in itself and that also stands for something more abstract. Heart: Literally = a muscle in the human body that pumps blood Figuratively = love, devotion, etc. Book: Literally = a stack of bound papers that provide information Figuratively = knowledge, education, social status, etc.
