Warm-up Family A and Family B both have 8 people in their
family. The age of each member is listed below. Find the MAD for each data set and explain what those values mean. Addams Family: 35, 5, 42, 9, 16, 3, 8, 12 Muenster Family: 1, 5, 29, 3, 7, 35, 6, 9

Correlation vs. Causation
Regression Correlation vs. Causation
3
Correlation vs. Causation
Just because two variables have a high correlation (r-value) does not mean that one causes the other. The only way to prove causation is through experimentation (not just a study) Two variables can be related without causing one another.
4
Correlation Causation
A statistical way to measure the relationship between two sets of data. Means that both things are observed at the same time. Means that one thing will cause the other. Video:

Is it Causation or Correlation?
Ex 1. A recent study showed that college students were more likely to vote than their peers who were not in school. Correlation Ex 2. Dr. Shaw noticed that there was more trash in the hallways after 2nd period than 1st period. Correlation First two examples: correlations Last example: causation Ex 3. You hit your little sister and she cries Causation
6
Example A study of 50 cities in North America finds a strong correlation (r =.75) between the number of teachers employed in a city and the dog food sales in the city. Are the teachers encouraging people to buy dog food? Are there any other factors or causes to consider?
7
Example A study of 30 developing nations find a strong correlation (r = .82) between the number of radio stations per capita and the number of new cancer cases reported each year. Do radio stations cause cancer? Are there any other factors or causes to consider?
