Communists in China had been trying to overthrow the government since 1927
The Nationalist government had been weakened after World War II
This led to a Civil War between the communists and the nationalists, with the U.S. Playing peacemaker while supporting the nationalists.
The Communists successfully overthrew the government in China was now the worlds most populous Communist state

4. Communist China and the U.S.
President Truman refused to recognize Communist China and its new leader Mao Zedong
Instead the U.S. continued to recognize the Nationalists who had moved to Taiwan
The U.S. Was even able to keep Communist China from being represented in the United Nations
However, many Americans were shocked the U.S. couldn’t stop the fall of China into Communism

5. The Korean War breaks out
After World War II, Korea was divided into 2 zones: Communist North Korea and Democratic South Korea
In 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea to unite under a Communist regime
Truman saw this as similar to Hitler invasions and sent U.S. Troops in to resist the invasion
Truman convinces the United Nations this invasion was an act of aggression and now had U.N. Approval for sending in troops.

6. The Korean War
Truman sent General MacArthur to stop North Korea from overrunning South Korea
MacArthur surprised the North Koreans and pushed them back into North Korea to the Chinese border
China sent in troops and pushed the U.S. Troops back into southern South Korea
MacArthur criticized Truman publicly for not attacking China so Truman recalled MacArthur

7. Consequences of the Korean War
Dwight D. Eisenhower became the new President and promised to end the Korean War
In July of 1951 the Soviet Union surprisingly suggested a cease-fire
An armistice was signed in 1953 which ended the war but left the division of Korea exactly as it had been
The lack of victory caused Americans to be even more fearful of communist aggression
