11 IDM2004 G. Gerbier SPL beam produces « super beam » = low energy 260 MeV neutrino beam CERN working groups results

12 IDM2004 G. Gerbier New LINAC An ideal complementary e beam : the « beta beam » Concept proposed by Piero Zucchelli at CERN Produce radioactive ions (ISOL technique), 6 He and 18 Ne Accelerate them in the CERN accelerator complex up to of order 100, to produce 0.3 GeV neutrinos Store ions in a storage ring with long straight sections aimed at a far detector Advantages : strongly focussed neutrino beam due to small Q value of beta decays very pure flavour composition ( contamination ~ 10 -4 ) perfectly known energy spectrum http://beta-beam.web.cern.ch/beta-beam/

15 Outlook NB : advantages of Fréjus site –Good and known rock, horizontal access –Central location in Europe, easy access by train, car, plane, ski… –Right distance to CERN for n osc studies Feasability study under way –Cavities shape, rock extraction and evacuation, cost PMT technology and R&D underway Formation of collaboration –Working group : coordinator J Bouchez (Saclay) bouchez@hep.saclay.cea.fr bouchez@hep.saclay.cea.fr –NNN (Neutrino and Nucleon decay) workshop in spring 2005 at Aussois, near Modane, organised together with UNO US collab Welcome…
