Navigating Campus Imagine yourself as a new student at UW, living in the McCarty dorms. On the first day of classes, you wake up late, scrambling to get your things together to head out in search of Calculus 124 in the Fisheries building. Despite printing out the South Campus map, you quickly become hopelessly lost on your journey, and as a result miss your class. When recounting your traumatic morning, your friend asks, “Why didn’t you just use CampusQuest to find your way to class?”

Objectives CampusQuest would allow users to find the quickest path between locations on campus. This service will be accessible via the web through any type of interface – desktop, laptop, pda, etc., with continual updates showing the latest conditions on campus.

The Architecture The basic plan for constructing this service is to use current Campus maps and extract the data to be used as a graph. The shortest path will be found using Dijkstra’s algorithm, using both flags within each node and the weight of each edge to determine the best path. The architecture should be built as flexible as possible to allow for the addition of new services, such as new types of paths, updates of campus conditions, new buildings, etc.

Limitations and Risks The main limitation/risk of CampusQuest is the ability and accuracy to extract data from the campus maps available online. Another limitation is the number of factors a person may take into account when choosing a route, since our program would only take into account a limited number.

Is it Feasible? Yes! We feel that this is a workable project. Although some aspects may be daunting, most parts of it should be fairly straight-forward. We hope that it will help new students and visitors learn their way around campus.
