After the Revolutionary War
What do all of these quotes have in common? “Liberty…is the great parent of science and of virtue; and a nation will be great in both always in proportion as it is free.” – Thomas Jefferson “Without liberty, law loses its nature and its name and becomes oppression.” – James Wilson Natural liberty is a gift of the Creator to the whole human race, and that civil liberty is founded in that; and cannot be wrested from any people, without the most manifest violation of justice.” – Alexander Hamilton “I had always hoped that the younger generation receiving their early impressions after the flame of liberty had been kindled…would have sympathized with oppression wherever found.” – Thomas Jefferson “Liberty must at all hazards be supported.” – John Adams Do you see a conflict? Hamilton and Adams never owned slaves, but the others did. Jefferson may have owned more than 650 slaves throughout his lifetime. Warm Up for tomorrow on this topic.
