It’s All Elemental… a webquest by Andrew Welsh, CA
2
Introduction Your job today is to start your introduction in to the exciting world of chemistry. You will be looking at that chart thingy (periodic table), and becoming proficient at understanding how to read one square of it. Through this introduction you will be able to not only read your assigned square of the periodic table, but also be able to understand any of the squares.
3
Task You will be working in groups of two (2) to present information about your assigned element. You will need to provide the following in a PowerPoint presentation: 1. A title slide with a picture of your element in its state at 25 ° C (room temperature), the name of your element, and you and your partner’s name. 2. A slide with essential information Element name Boiling point & unit Symbol Melting point & unit Atomic number Density & unit Average atomic mass & unit Properties 3. A slide with information on who/date of discovery and uses of the element in society. Include pictures. 4. A slide that contains an orbital diagram of the element, with labeling of all of the parts (nucleus, protons, electrons).

The Elements of Surprise…
To gather the information that is needed you should research the web pages, in the resource section, to complete the assignment. Be sure to visit all five websites, as some websites provide information that others may not have. Once you have gathered all of the information that is required, you can then start on the PowerPoint presentation. On the due date, your group will be responsible for presenting the information to the class.
5
Resources Webelements – a periodic table on the internet
2. Chemicool – cooler than absolute zero! 3. Los Alamos National Laboratory – a resource for students The photographic periodic table of elements – info and photos Jefferson Lab – It’s Elemental!
6
Evaluation You will be graded on both content and presentation of work. Both members of each group should participate. A link to the rubric is on my website.

Conclusion By studying one single element on the periodic table, you have hopefully been able to see that there is a plethora of information that is all tied into chemistry. This will only be the beginning of our use of the periodic table, as we will dive further into its understandings and uses as a tool to understanding the wonderful world of chemistry!
