We will be looking at what being a child soldier means from the perspective of one former child soldier. Ishmael Beah was a child soldier in Sierra Leone and he has written a book about his experiences. Create list of words that explain what Ishmael Beah has ‘lost’ through the war How did these experiences might have affected him and other child soldiers. Before watching: Why are children used in war?- list After: Did Ishmael Beah mention any of these reasons? Child soldiers are often recruited to fight in wars because they can easily be manipulated, may be vulnerable and have few choices. How might you feel having nothing that reminds you of your family or community. Imagine that you had to flee home. Think about this and what would one thing you would like to take in that situation?

How decolonization has led to HR Violations
As a result of colonialism and imperialism, Africa suffered long term effects, such as the loss of important natural resources like gold and rubber, economic devastation, cultural confusion, geopolitical division, and political subjugation. Europeans often justified this using the concept of the White Man's Burden, an obligation to "civilize" the peoples of Africa. On February 12th 1941, United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill met to discuss the postwar world. The result was the Atlantic Charter. One of the provisions in this document that was introduced by Roosevelt was the autonomy of imperial colonies. Therefore after World War II, there was pressure on Britain to abide by the terms of the Atlantic Charter
