Complete the Venn Diagram comparing the Nervous and Endocrine systems.
HW: Study – Nervous/Endocrine Test tomorrow. *Study cards = +2pts!* Do Now: /26/16 Complete the Venn Diagram comparing the Nervous and Endocrine systems. Be sure to include 3 examples in each section.

Nervous System Endocrine System
Fast response (reaction time) Uses impulses to send messages Organs are Brain, spinal cord, and nerves Uses Neurons CNS/PNS Slower response (reaction time) Uses hormones to send messages Organs are called “glands” Travels through the bloodstream Hormones: ex: adrenaline, thyroxine, HGH, insulin, testosterone Both react to stimuli Both help maintain homeostasis Both are systems of the body that send messages Hypothalamus

4. Describe how 3 types of neurons work together
If you touch the tip of a needle on a cactus, the SENSORY NEURONS in your skin will send the message of “pain” to your INTERNEURONS in your spinal cord and brain that processes the message of “pain”. They send the message to take your hand off the cactus to the MOTOR NEURONS and they stimulate the muscle in your hand to move off the needle of the plant.

Cerebrum Voluntary Tasks: Thinking, speaking, etc. Cerebellum Balance/Coordination Walk, sports, bicycle, etc Medulla Involuntary Tasks: Heart rate, breathing, etc. Spinal Cord Bundle of nerves that carry messages to and from the brain
10
Pituitary (Master Gland)
Thyroid Parathyroid Thymus Adrenal Pancreas Testes
11
Pituitary HGH: Growth Thyroid Thyroxin: Metabolism, calcium/phosphorus Parathyroid Parathyroid: helps thyroid gland Thymus Thymosin: Immune System Support Adrenal Adrenaline: “Fight or Flight” response Pancreas Insulin/Glucagon: Sugar levels Testes Testosterone: Sex Characteristics
12
When you watch a scary movie, you may feel your heart racing, sweating, breathing getting heavier etc. These responses are all caused by the HORMONE named ADRENALINE. ADRENALINE is produced by the ADRENAL GLANDS which sit on top of your kidneys. This response is called “Fight or Flight”. *response to a threat: strength or speed*
13
The nervous system maintains homeostasis in your body because it constantly processes information (stimuli) and responds to those changes in the environment accordingly. Your nervous system tries to keep you from harm or hurting yourself. It also coordinates with the Endocrine system, since both systems send messages.

Vocabulary: cerebellum stimulus Thyroid or Parathyroid Spinal cord
1) Part of the brain that controls balance and muscular coordination____________________ 2) A change or signal in the environment that causes an organism to react_________________ 3) Gland that regulates the amount of calcium in your blood_______________ Thick column of nerve tissue________________ 5) Largest part of brain; responsible for voluntary movement, learning, etc_____________________ cerebellum stimulus Thyroid or Parathyroid Spinal cord cerebrum
15
hypothalamus axon motor dendrites Adrenal gland brain
6) The gland that is the major link between the Nervous and Endocrine systems___________________________ 7) Part of a nerve cell that carries messages away from the cell body_______________ 8) Part of the brain responsible for breathing and heartbeat____________________ 9) Structure that sends an impulse to a muscle, then contracts_____________________ 10) Part of a nerve cell that carries messages to the cell body______________________ 11) Glands that are located on top of the kidneys______________________ 12) The central nervous system is made up of the spinal cord and_____________________ hypothalamus axon Medulla (brainstem) motor dendrites Adrenal gland brain
16
Pituitary gland hormones depressant adrenaline Nerve impulse response
13) Pea shaped gland located in the brain; produces human growth hormone_____________________ 14) The endocrine system sends chemical messages through the body in the form of__________________________ 15) Alcohol acts as a _____________________ because it slows down activities of the central nervous system 16) The fight or flight reaction is caused by a rush of this hormone_______________________ 17) The message that a neuron carries is called a_________________ 18) A __________________ is what your body does in reaction to a stimulus Pituitary gland hormones depressant adrenaline Nerve impulse response

It must be a sentence that makes sense!!
Try this: Ten Finger Summary Summarize how the Endocrine system works in 10 WORDS OR LESS!! (Use your notes!) Who can summarize the endocrine system in the least amount of words? It must be a sentence that makes sense!!
