Figure 1 . Transgene constructs used to investigate the cis DNA sequence requirements for somatic hypermutation. The first four constructs were made by Betz et al. [11]: the first is similar to the endogenous rearranged κ chain locus; the second and third are deletion constructs, with either the 3′ or intronic enhancer (E) removed. In the fourth construct, the κ promoter (P) has been replaced with the β-globin promoter (βP). The final three constructs were made by Yelamos et al. [12], and in these cases the VJ region has been replaced by other sequences (gpt and neo, bacterial genes; βG, human β-globin gene).
