Whole Class Discussion/Note-Taking: Discuss and take notes on how Hester deals with adversities and overcoming adversities in Chapters 4 and 5. Adversities=suicidal thoughts, her child’s anguish, Chillingworth’s potential to harm her and her baby, daily struggle to endure shame and live as an outcast, and loneliness. Overcoming Adversities=revealing she wronged Chillingworth, keeping the secret of her baby’s father, inner strength, sewing, charity for the poor, her silence in the face of criticism, and connecting with fellow sinners.
