Do Now:
2
Acceleration Essential question: What is the difference between positive and negative acceleration?
3
Objective Students will be able to understand acceleration conceptually and mathematically. Students will be able to determine the difference between positive and negative acceleration.
4
Acceleration Definition: Rate of change of velocity.
Acceleration happens when an object changes speed, its direction, or both.
5
Continued… Acceleration units are meters/second 2 m/s2
6
Positive Acceleration
Definition: When something is speeding up acceleration is increasing. Ex: Getting on the freeway.
7
Negative Acceleration
When something is slowing down acceleration is decreasing. Ex: Exiting the freeway.
8
Do Now: What type of acceleration is taking place in this scene?
Speeding up? Slowing down? Change in direction? Or all of them? Or 2 of them?
9
Objective Students will be able to understand acceleration conceptually and mathematically. Students will be able to determine the difference between positive and negative acceleration.
10
Calculating Acceleration
a= Acceleration vf= Final Velocity (The velocity that the object ended at) vO= Initial Velocity (The velocity that the object started traveling at) t= Time the object went from vO to vf.
11
Example #1 What is a race car’s acceleration if its velocity changes from 0 m/s to 40 m/s in 4 sec?
12
Example #2 A down hill Skier’s velocity increases from 9 m/s to 18 m/s in 3 seconds. What is her acceleration?
13
Example #3 A soccer ball was kicked, after 10 seconds, its velocity is 50 m/s. What is its acceleration?
14
How to graph Acceleration
The curved line tells you that during each second your velocity is greater than the second before.
15
How Acceleration looks like when its constant (Extra Info not tested)
