2 Progressives The progressives were trying to improve or reform life in the United States. They didn’t always agree with each other. improve the work conditions (safety) for the workers eliminate child labor improve pay ban alcohol Make cities safer and cleaner

3 Muckrakers Muckrakers were sensationalist journalists that were exposing poor working conditions, child labor, corruption, and crime. Upton Sinclair was an example of a muckraker. He wrote about the meat packing industry.

4 Upton Sinclair Wrote The Jungle about the conditions in meat packing plants.

5 Theodore Roosevelt Passed (1906) the pure Food and Drug Act. Meat Inspection Act to improve the safety of what we eat. He was also a conservationist and passed the National Parks

6 John Muir A conservationist that took pictures of the U.S. in black and white.

7 16th Amendments Progressive income tax.

8 17th Amendment Allow citizens to elect U.S. senators.

9 18th Amendment-Prohibition
Banned (prohibited, outlawed) the manufacture or distribution of alcohol.

10 19th Amendment Women get to vote. (sufferage)
