Chapter 2 Matter Section 2.1 What is Matter? (p. 38)
3
Understand the nature of matter
Objectives Understand the nature of matter Differentiate between a pure substance and a mixture
4
Chemistry- study of compositions,
structures, properties, and its changes and interactions I. Composition (chart on p. 39) Matter- anything that has mass and occupies space A. Atoms 1. Element- not made of any other substance- cannot be broken down by chemical means 2. Atom- smallest part of an element that still retains all properties of the element
5
B. Elements combine chemically to form compounds
Molecule- smallest part of a compound that still retains all properties of the compound C. Chemical formula- 2 C6H12O6 Element Coefficient Subscript
6
II. Pure Substances and Mixtures
A. Pure substance- substances with fixed compositions with definite properties Can be an element or a compound B. Mixture- 2 or more substances not chemically combined (sub. keep their individual properties) 1. Classified by how thoroughly they are mixed
7
a. Heterogeneous mixture- not
thoroughly mixed, particles are of different sizes b. Homogeneous- thoroughly mixed, particles of similar size 2. Two or more liquids mixed a. Miscible- will dissolve into each other b. Immiscible- will not dissolve
