Abiotic Factors Ch. 20 Sect. 1
2
What is an ecosystem? All organisms need both living (biotic) and nonliving (abiotic) things to survive. Ecosystem – is all the living and non living things in a given area. Biotic factors – are the living things in an ecosystem. Ex. Birds, frogs, plants, humans, bacteria, fungi, Abiotic factors- are the nonliving things in an ecosystem. Ex. Water, air, sunlight. Biotic factors and abiotic factors depend on each other.
3
What are the nonliving parts of an ecosystem?
Sun is the source of almost all energy on Earth. Has 2 abiotic factors: climate and temp. Climate describes average weather conditions in an area over time. Includes: temperature, moisture, wind, precipitation. Temperature describes how hot or cold something or an area is. Water – All life on Earth require water. Atmosphere – the layer of gases that surround the Earth. Soil – bits of rock, water, air, minerals and remains of living things.
