Safety First You will be doing many investigations, which require the use of science equipment. To ensure a safe science classroom, there are expectations for behavior during investigations. These expectations must be followed at all times. Review these statements in terms of why we take time in science to learn about safety.

Group Roles Recorder – writes for the groups
Materials Manager – gathers materials and makes sure they are returned at end of class. Reporter – shares out for the group Discussion Leader- keeps the group on task, reads directions, makes sure everyone has a chance to be heard. Review the responsibilities, then have the groups discuss and decide who will take each role. If groups have 3 people someone needs to take 2 roles If groups have 5 people then you need 2 people to share a role. To make sure each group has decided the roles, after a few minutes ask each role to raise their hand.

Materials Manager: Obtain your groups safety scenario, a whiteboard and an Expo Marker
Discussion Leader: Carefully read out loud the safety expectations and the safety scenario in the sheet protector. Everybody: Identify which science expectation(s) was not followed in the scenario. Recorder: On the white board, write down the number of the expectation(s) not followed. Reporter: Share out to the entire class your group’s scenario and what expectations were not followed. Review these responsibilities and then leave this slide up while they are working in their group. Tell them they have 10 minutes to work before you will share out.

Science Safety Expectations
1. Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times in the science room. Horseplay, practical jokes, and pranks will not be tolerated. 2. Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. Ask your teacher questions if you do not understand the instructions. 3. Do not touch any equipment, supplies, or other materials in the science room without permission from the teacher. 4. Perform only authorized and approved experiments. Do not conduct any experiments when the teacher is out of the room. 5. Do not put materials in your mouth, unless it is part of a teacher approved experiment. 6. Your desk and the area around it must be kept organized during the investigation. 7.When it is time, you must clean up your area and return all the materials to where you got them from. 8. Follow your teacher’s instructions to dispose of any waste materials generated in an experiment. 9. Report any accident (fire, spill, breakage, etc.), injury (cut, burn, etc.), or hazardous condition (broken equipment, etc.) to the teacher immediately. Display this slide while groups are sharing out. Make sure you leave 5 minutes for clean up. If you run out of time for all groups to share have the remaining groups write down what scenario they had & what rules they thought were broken in their spiral notebook. They will share tomorrow. Have groups use a tissue to clean their whiteboards.
