Seeking New Trade Routes
As mentioned before, trade was a huge motivator to the Europeans during this period. Was it the only one? No, there were many others. The easiest way to remember their goals were the Three G’s: Gold (money, profits, etc.) Glory (fame, popularity, etc.) God (missionary work, etc.) Vid

The Portuguese Explore
Portugal was an up and coming nation. However, they didn’t have direct access to the Mediterranean, and that made trade more difficult for them. They wanted another way to the spices and riches of the Far East (India, China, etc). How were they going to do that? Enter Prince Henry the Navigator Henry the Navigator was a prince that was fascinated with the world, and learning its boundaries, etc. He gathered astronomers, geographers, etc. in an effort to increase this knowledge. In future years, his efforts would pay off. Interestingly, Henry never actually navigated that much. He simply inspired others to do so.

Group assignments: line up against the front wall please: Pick one of the following explorers/people: Henry the Navigator: Bartholomeu Dias Vasco da Gama Leif Erickson / Vikings Christopher Columbus Amerigo Vespucci Vasco Nunez de Balboa Ferdinand Magellan You have 30~ minutes to complete this, so get right to it! We will start with 45 minutes remaining of class; good luck!

Don’t Forget! Now, you will be doing some research on them! Make sure to answer the following questions as part of your presentation (slide show, please!): What is your person's name, when they lived (birth-death), background, history, etc.? What country did they represent? What are they famous for? What is the impact of what they did? Things to remember: Make sure to include a class activity, for at least 1 minute, of your mini-lesson. Involve your classmates! Have fun! If you use a video clip, keep it to 2 minutes or less. Try to have at least 5 slides. Don't forget to include a Works Cited page Binder Check will occur while you research!
