Do Now: You are an American citizen of the 1830s: Mexico has offered free land in Texas to anyone who desires to settle there. However, the Mexican government requires that any Texas settlers learn Spanish, join the Catholic Church and is considering banning slaves from entering the territory. Would you be willing to make the journey south to Texas? Explain why or why not.

3. The old three hundred
Stephen Austin gets land grant from Mexican government to settle Americans in Texas after his father dies.
Leads 300 American citizens to settle in what is now Texas.
The Old Three hundred become the territory’s most well respected citizens and community leaders.
3,000 Mexican citizens (Tejanos) lived in Texas at the time and worked well with the settlers.

4. Mexican government’s reasons to offer Americans land
Mexican government needed money to pay back debts from the war for independence it fought with Spain in 1821.
Land was cheaper in Mexico(4 cents for 184 acres) than in the U.S.(1.25 for 80 acres).
Did not want America to take the land.
Had better land for cattle than Oregon territory.

Additionally, the ad must provide one benefit of settling in Texas as opposed to remaining in the United States.
