1.5 Distributing and Factoring
Objectives: 1.) Distributive property 2.) Factoring
2
Distributive Property a(b + c) = ab + ac
a(b + c) and ab + ac are equivalent expressions
3
Example 1: 5 (2x + 3)= 10x + 15
4
Example 2: 4 (3y - 2)= 12y - 8
5
Example 3: (3t - 7)6 = - 42 18t
6
Example 5: 5(3k + 7n -1) = 15k + 35n - 5
7
Factoring ab + ac = a(b + c)
8
Steps To Factoring: 1.) Find a # that is divisible by all numbers 2.) Take that # out and put it on the outside of the ( ) 3.) Divide the # you factored out by EVERY TERM and put your answer inside the ( ) **Make sure your final answer is completely factored**
9
Ex 6: Factor: 3x + 3y 3(x + y)
10
Ex 7: Factor: 5x + 10 5•x + 5 •2 5(x + 2)
11
Ex 8: Factor: 9x + 27y - 18 9x + 9(3)y – 9(2) 9(x + 3y - 2)
12
Ex 9: Factor: x 3(4 + x)
13
Ex 10: Factor: 3xy +5x +7xz Answer: x( 3y+ 5 +7z)
14
Ex 11: Factor: 6x +3y +21 Answer: 3(2x +y +7)
15
Ex 12: Factor: 4 +8y +14z Answer: 2(2+4y+7z)
