Today we will read a story about a girl who only likes to eat certain kinds of food in “Bread and Jam for Frances,” by Russell Hoban.

3 Listen to “Bread and Jam for Frances” to see how looking at things differently can create changes.

4 Team Talk What questions can you ask to find out how Frances changes when she looks at things differently?

5 When you are fond of something, you really like it .
Frances’s father likes to eat breakfast because he is fond of eggs . When you are fond of something, you really like it .

6 fond I like summer because I am fond of warm days.
I am fond of cats, but I also like dogs. Name things you are fond of. Explain why you are fond of it. fond

7 proper Proper means correct.

8 Carpenters need proper tools to repair the house.
You need to check to make sure you give the proper answer on the test. If you do not wear the proper clothing outside, you will get cold.

9 prop-er Name a word that means the opposite of proper.
Name a word that means about the same as proper. prop-er

10 Scarcely means “barely”.

11 If your friends talk too softly, you will scarcely hear them.
If a sign is far away, you will scarcely see it. If you have a bad cold, you will scarcely taste your food.

The fish looked miserable. Frances only likes bread and jam. France’s mother only gives her bread and jam. Frances decides to eat different food.
