2 gazing When you are gazing at something, you are looking at it for a long time. This dog is gazing, or looking closely, at a squirrel. What is something that you have spent time gazing at?

3 hero A hero is someone who is admired for doing something brave or good. This dog is a hero. It saved the boy from getting hurt. Who do you think is a hero? Why?

4 sprang If a person or animal sprang, they suddenly moved upwards or forwards. The cat saw the food. She sprang toward her dish. What are some animals you have seen sprang at something?

5 exercise A dog needs exercise every day. This dog wants to run fast.
Exercise is physical activity that helps you become strong and healthy. A dog needs exercise every day. This dog wants to run fast. What is your favorite kind of exercise?

6 sore Your body is sore if it feels painful or tender.
The dog hurt its paw. The paw is sore. What kinds of exercise left you feeling sore?

7 studied If you studied a subject, you spent time learning about it.
Before getting a puppy, the girl studied a book about dog care. What is the most interesting thing that you have studied?

8 depended If you depended on someone, you needed that person’s help.
The dog depended on its owner for food and water. Who have you depended on in the past?

9 overlooked If you overlooked something, you didn’t notice it or didn’t see it. They overlooked, or didn’t see, where the dog was hiding. What could happen if you overlooked a question on a test?
