1 To know the format of questions in the poetry section of the exam
To understand ways of approaching the task To be able to write in response to the task

2 24 marks out of a two hour exam worth 72 marks overall
AO1 Articulate informed, personal and creative responses to literary texts, using associated concepts and terminology, and coherent, accurate written expression AO2 Analyse ways in which meanings are shaped in literary texts AO4 Explore connections across literary texts Basic information which students already know. Brief discussion that they are getting an hour on this question in the mock but probably should award less time in the real thing as more marks for Street Car

3 Question Stem Compare the ways in which poets explore ……………in (NAMED POEM) and one other poem of your choice . In your answer you should consider: The poets’ development of themes The poets’ use of language and imagery The use of other poetic devices Discuss the question stem. Idea that the focus of the exemplar questions we have had has been thematic. Discuss some of the ideas students might explore in the second two bullet points – particular “other poetic devices” considering structure etc.

4 Using the question stem, design a question with To My Nine Year Old Self as a named poem. (Today your “poem of choice” will be A Minor Role, so keep that in mind.) Compare the ways in which poets explore ……………in (NAMED POEM) and one other poem of your choice . In your answer you should consider: The poets’ development of themes The poets’ use of language and imagery The use of other poetic devices Idea here is that students are considering themes by which paired poems can be compared. From student suggestions, select a question as a focus for the lesson and display on the board.

5 The poets’ development of themes
What does this actually mean? Explore the idea that a theme is raised in a poem, the poets’ viewpoints surrounding it come across, the poem may lead to an overall “message” linked to the theme etc. How are we lead to the message / lack of message / final thought linked to this theme at the end of the poem? Structure and narrative voice may well be at play so worth a mention here? Link idea of development to AO2

6 How does the theme of ……………develop in To My Nine Year Old Self and A Minor Role?
Insert theme stated in chosen class question for today. Track the development of the them along the continuum. Provide A3 paper for students to complete this on. Afterwards, students to add quotes and notes linked to the second two bullet points to the continuum. A Minor Role

7 Does this introduction deal with the “development of the theme”
Look at this introduction

8 Model Paragraph Using a point about how the theme is presented at the beginning of each poem, craft an exam response paragraph as a whole class modelling activity. Focus on comparison. Following this, students to craft their own paragraphs whilst teacher circulates, providing instant feedback.
