Different Types of Thematic Maps
Dot Maps – Dots are placed on the map to represent an event – these are great to show distribution. Cartograms – The size of a location is based on a particular defined characteristic – distortion is evident! Choropleth Maps – Each unit area is shaded or colored to suggest magnitude or intensity of the event. Cognitive/Mental Maps – Map used to show a person’s perception. Flow Maps – Map that shows movement often using arrows. Proportional Symbol Maps – Similar to dot maps – the size of the dot grows with increased value. Isoline Maps – Uses lines to show places where values are equal.
