Dear 2nd-5th grade Parents,
I am excited to announce, we are officially a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) campus! We use technology quite regularly to help guide and extend learning. We use technology in a variety of ways, including to take pictures and make videos to show our thinking. We use them to create, explore, and elaborate our learning. Since devices are limited in our classroom, we are now allowing students to bring their own device to use at appropriate times and only as instructed. We will not have “free device time” unless it is earned as a class incentive in the future. At this time, we are allowing iPads, other tablets. We are not allowing cell phones or iPods. Students will be responsible for caring for their device’s safety. Your child’s teacher will provide a place to store the device while not in use so that it does not become a distraction. Students are not to share their device with any other students. Your student should be the only one handling their device. If you do choose to send a device with your child, it will be at your own risk. The teacher and the school will not be responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen devices. We will do our best to monitor, but we cannot guarantee things won’t happen. If your child is found using their device inappropriately, they will lose their BYOD privileges. We will have a zero tolerance policy for inappropriate technology use. Of course, this is only with your permission. If you are not comfortable with your child bringing a device, we understand. Grades 2-3 will have multiple iPads and Grades 4-5 will have multiple Chromebooks in the classroom that can be used, but these devices must be shared. If you give permission for your child to bring their device and keep it securely in the classroom, please sign the “Telecommunication Devices” form behind this letter. We will provide a list of free apps for you to download prior to sending it to school. If we need you to download a free app on the device, we will ask you to do so at home, so you are in control of the password. We will not be responsible for unauthorized purchases your students make with your password. Students will be given the Katy ISD Wifi Password and may ONLY access tools using the school’s monitored Wifi. If you have any comments, questions, or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s homeroom teacher. **Students may start bringing their device on the same day they return the Telecommunication Devices Form. 3rd Grade Teachers Alicia Osen 1/5/2016
