Laboratory Safety
18
Following guidelines keep you safe!
Science is a way of exploring the world around you… explore safely!!!!
19
General Guidelines… Be responsible… No horseplay Follow directions
Perform only the experiments you are given permission to do. Don’t touch anything until you are told to by the teacher. Never eat or drink in the lab.
20
Lab Courtesy Have your pre lab activities done—your lab partners are relying on you. Monitor your experiment at all times Keep your work area clean and organized. Clean and put away all equipment and clean your lab area!
21
Chemicals All chemicals can be dangerous—do not touch, taste or smell any chemical unless told to do so. Check the label of chemicals twice before removing any of the contents. If you are putting chemicals into new containers---label, label, label!!! Dispose of unused chemicals into the proper container.
22
Equipment If you do not know how to properly use a piece of equipment—ask!! Examine glassware for damage before use. If glassware breaks, do not pick it up…let the teacher know! Make sure your hands are dry before unplugging electrical equipment. Be careful when heating substances—don’t look into containers being heated or touch them with your bare hands!!!
23
Clothing ALWAYS wear your goggles (on your eyes!)
Aprons and gloves should be worn when necessary. Contact lenses should not be worn when chemicals are used. Long hair must be tied back and dangling jewelry and clothes secured. Shoes must cover all of your foot (no sandals!) Never eat or apply makeup in a laboratory!!
