HSES Library Media Center
Welcome! Welcome to the Hull-Sanford Elementary School Library Media Center! HSES Library Media Center

Come in! Our school library media center is located right in the center of the school. As you step inside Hull-Sanford, you will automatically see the library doors. Please step inside and join me to learn how to check-in and check-out books, and also to find out where things are located.

Circulation Desk When you first come in to the media center, you will see the circulation desk. This is where you can return your library books. Just gently push them inside the “book return” slot. The circulation desk is also where you go to check out new books…but we will get to that later in this orientation.

Fiction There are 3 main sections of the library where you may find books. Fiction books are located in the right-hand section of the library. All of the books in this section will have an F at the top of the call number on the spine of the book. Books here are arranged in ABC order, by the authors last name. You will see the first three letters of the author’s last name on the bottom of the call number.

Picture Books Picture books are located in the left section of the library. All of the books in this section will have an E at the top of the call number on the spine of the book. Like the fiction section, books here are also arranged in ABC order, by the authors last name. You will see the first three letters of the author’s last name on the bottom of the call number.

Non-Fiction Non-fiction books are located in the middle section of the library. All of the books in this section will have a Dewey Decimal number at the top of the call number on the spine of the book. These books are organized into the 10 different Dewey categories.

Picking a book As you are picking a book, you may want to use the colored dots on the spine of the book. They will guide you to books that are on your reading level. Your homeroom teacher will let you know what color dot you should be looking for. Also, please make sure to use a shelf marker as you are taking books from the shelves. It will help you remember where the book should be returned to.

Computers Another way you may select a book is by using one of the four computers located across from the circulation desk. You may use Destiny on these computers to search for books and also find out which section of the library they are located.

2 Library Card Book Barcode Checkout Card Checking Out
When you have found the book you would like to check out, please return to the circulation desk. Here, you will first scan your library card, then scan the barcode on your book, and last scan the checkout card. If you forgot your library card, don’t worry, we an extra for every student right next to the check-out station. And remember the number 2 to help you remember the check-out rules – you may check out 2 books for 2 weeks. After that, you need to return them so they may be enjoyed by the other students.

Class visits Oftentimes, students will get to visit the library with their whole class. You may enjoy story time on the carpet, or sit at the tables for a lesson or activity with Mrs. Minish. The SMART Board in the library is mobile, so it can easily be moved where ever it is needed.

Reference Sometimes class projects require the use of reference materials. They are located on the shelves beside our tables and chairs. You may use these books in the media center, but they are not available for checkout. You may also choose to use the computers to search online databases, such as World Book Online or Galileo Kids. The login information for these sites is posted beside the computers.

Other Areas There are many couches, comfy chairs, and kid-sized tables in the media center. Please feel free to find a nice quiet spot to enjoy your book, or browse through a magazine, as you are visiting the library.

Other Areas Behind the circulation desk, you will find the friendly Ms. Johnson, always ready to help you with any questions you may have. Mrs. Minish’s office, the teacher’s resource room, and the professional collection room are also behind the circulation desk. Please remember that these are adult only zones. Across from the circulation desk is a conference room and a media production room. This is where the morning announcements take place every day, with help from fifth grade students. Listen up during the announcements to learn about fun upcoming school events, such as book character day!
