Foxp3 expression occurs during thymic selection as a consequence of affinity for self-ligand or specific antigen-bearing cells. Continued expression of Foxp3 is required for natural TR function in the periphery, and may be involved in the generation of induced TR cells following tolerogenic stimulation of T cells.
