A Few Tips About Memory and Learning
(which may help your success in college and this course)

Rule #1: Pay Attention Attention is necessary for learning
Stick with your interests Take breaks Time of day, physiological state matters

Rule #2: Don’t multitask
Interrupted tasks take 2-3 times as long and result in twice as many errors Avoid interruptions One thing at a time Hang up and drive

Rule #3: Organize and Elaborate
We better remember information that follows schemas and is organized Organize new information hierarchically Attach meaning to what you’re learning Generate your own examples

Rule #4: Use More Senses The more senses we use, the more active and engaged we become Find other sensory modes for hard to understand information Pictures are especially useful

Rule #5: Repeat, Repeat, Repeat!
Repetition increases learning Distribute learning over time Take breaks

Rule #6: Get Enough Sleep
Sleep deprivation hinders learning We process new learning during sleep Chronic sleep restriction leads to reduction in cog/memory performance We tend to be unaware of this loss

Rule #7: Exercise We were built to move Exercise improves cognition
Cool down is especially good for learning
