During the late 1800s, pressures from nativists resulted in the U.S. government limiting immigration from China and Japan.

4 Examples of the U.S. government limiting immigration included: the Chinese Exclusion Act and the Gentleman’s Agreement with Japan.

5 By the 1940s, Japanese Americans were seen as security threats to the U.S. as a result of Japan’s involvement in World War II (WWII). President Franklin D. Roosevelt asks for and gets Congress to declare war on Japan, after the attack at Pearl Harbor (December 8, 1941)

6 These increased feelings of racial prejudice toward Japanese Americans was a major cause of their internment during WWII.
