Comedy A dramatic work light and often humorous or satirical in tone that usually contains a happy resolution of the thematic conflict.

Tragedy Dramatic work that presents the downfall of a dignified character or characters involved in historically or socially significant events. Tragic events are usually set in motion by an error in judgment that lead to a disastrous conclusion— usually death.

Wit The ability to understand and express in a cleverly humorous manner the relationship between seemingly unrelated things.

Foil Character who provides a striking contrast to another character. Calls attention to certain traits of the main character.

Soliloquy In a drama, a soliloquy is a speech in which a character speaks thoughts aloud. Usually the character is alone on stage and does not directly address the audience.

Aside In a drama, an aside is when a character speaks thoughts aloud, which are meant to be heard by the audience, but not by the other characters.

Figurative Language Language that communicates ideas beyond the ordinary, literal meaning of words. Includes figures of speech such as metaphor, simile, and personification.

Foreshadowing A writer’s use of hints or clues to indicate events that will occur later in the plot.

Pun A joke that comes from a play on words. Often makes use of a word’s multiple meanings or rhyme.

Slander Oral communication of false statements injurious to a person's reputation. A malicious, false, or defamatory statement.

Prose The ordinary form of spoken or written language, without metrical structure, as distinguished from poetry or verse.

Honor Honesty, fairness, or integrity in one's beliefs and actions: a man of honor.

Satire The use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.

Innuendo/bawdy talk An indirect or subtle, usually derogatory implication in expression; an insinuation/Talk that is indecent; lewd; obscene.
