The transcription factors hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) and MYC strongly influence metabolism and have opposite effects on mitochondrial metabolism, although they are both involved in glucose uptake. HIF-1 induces autophagy, mitophagy, glycolysis, and expression of monocarboxylate transporter (MCT) 4. MYC induces the uptake of catabolites, such as lactate and fatty acids, by driving MCT1 expression, glutamine uptake and glutaminolysis, as well as serine and glycine biosynthesis.
