Presentation on theme: "What do humans require from their settlements?"— Presentation transcript:

1 What do humans require from their settlements?
What do you think a cave man would need from a place to live (settlement)? Write down as many things as you can think of, for example, water to drink.

2 Where is the best place for a settlement?
Today we are learning about… the things a settlement needs to be successful. These are called site and situational factors. By the end of the lesson… ALL can identify some site and situational factors (Level 3) MOST will be able to define the words site, situation and settlement (Level 4) SOME will be able to explain site and situational factors of a settlement (Level 5)

3 Site and Situational Factors
Protection If your high up you will see anyone before they attack you. Plenty of water Near a river, spring or well for drinking, cooking and washing. Not too much water Must not flood or be marshy. Rivers Easy to cross either on foot or by a bridge. Building material Near a wood or a rocky hill site for materials. Supply of wood Needed for fires for warmth and cooking. Flat land Easier to build on, for growing crops and travelling to other towns. Shelter A south facing slope will have more sun and will be protected from the cold north wind. Survival Standard of Living/Money

4 What might be important today?
Technology has reduced the importance of some original factors for example: Fresh water Defence But some things are still important: Transport Flat land Space for large houses with gardens

5 Where is the best place for a settlement?
How did early settlers get the following things? transport, shelter, protection, water, building materials, fuel Fill in your table, decide which site has the most ticks (and so is the best) and say why it is the best site. For each site you rejected say why it wasn’t suitable. For each of the following, explain why each one is no longer important when considering where to build a settlement: river bridging point, good farm land, flat land, dry land above the river flood plain, steep hill, river for water, nearby rock Take it Further! Label the Carlisle map to explain the site and situational factors that were important to early settlers.
