Emancipation Proclamation
Was an executive order given by president Lincoln Issued on January 1, 1863 Addressed the legal status of 3 million enslaved people

Goals Decrease man power of the confederacy
Strengthen the number of union soldiers Free slaves as areas in rebellion were quelled Change the overall goals of the Civil War

It did not: Could not be enforced in areas still under rebellion
Grant citizenship of ex-slaves Outlaw slavery Compensate owners

Outcome: About 20,000-50,000 slaves from places where rebellion had been subdue were immediately emancipated Emancipation became an explicit goal of the Civil War Led to the 13th amendment

From 1865 to 1877 (After the Civil War) Deciding and creating what the government/country will look like Reconstruction of state and society (especially focusing on the south)
