Objective: Describe the New England Colonies (political, social, religious, economic, and geographic) Do Now: Write down what you already know about the New England colonies. Included: New Hampshire (included Vermont), Massachusetts (included Maine), Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Education: - Many people knew how to read and write (the Bible) Education and religion were closely linked. Many children stopped going to school after elementary school because they were either poor or had to get jobs to support their families.

Economic Trade: furs, pickled beef, pork Fishing one of largest industries = food and money (ex: whaling) Families sent sons to become apprentices The Pilgrims traded with Native Americans

Religion: Very strict Pass religion test to prove faith is strong Government leaders also had to be church members – strong. Only male church members could vote. Females were not allowed to vote. Church members broke off from group if disagreed with church leaders. All had to attend church The most important part of the New England colonies: strict religion played a strong role in the government.

Geography Lots of fish, surrounded by water and lots of rivers. Massachusetts colony established by John Winthrop and the Puritans in 1629. Merchants exported dry fish. Connecticut founded by Thomas Hooker in 1636 New Hampshire founded by John Mason 1691 Maine (part of Massachusetts) by Pilgrims 1621 Rhode Island by Roger Williams 1638
