What Is Facebook?
Introduction to Facebook
Facebook is a popular and free social networking website. It allows you to connect with friends and family, share photos, organize events, and so much more.
Mark Zuckerberg started Facebook in 2004 at Harvard University. It was originally meant as a way to connect Harvard students, but now anyone 13 and older may join. Over 1 billion people worldwide currently use Facebook.
Facebook has many features available for you to use. Think of Facebook as the family fridge that all of your friends and family can see – it’s full of shared memories, accomplishments, and notes to one another. That’s what Facebook is – a way to share things with friends or connect with family you haven’t seen in a while.
You can share lots of other information on Facebook.  You can tell friends and family about places you've been, things you've done, stuff that you like, or simply how you're feeling or what you're thinking about on any particular day.
If you're interested in something that someone else puts on Facebook, you can quickly show your appreciation and boost that item's popularity with a 'Like'.  You can also write a comment to tell people how you feel about that item in greater detail, and you can even share that item on your own personal area of Facebook, so that your friends and family can 'Like' or comment on it too!
You can also join groups on Facebook to meet new people and discuss things that you enjoy or hold in common. It works much the same way as joining social clubs like the A.A.R.P. or Red Hat Society in real life, except it's much less formal and definitely a lot easier!
Or, if you're the type who likes to be at the heart of your social circle(s), you can use Facebook to schedule and plan your own social events, and then invite friends and family alike to your ideal get-together!

It’s easy to set up and navigate. The website is clean and clutter-free. Most importantly, it doesn't cost any money – all you need is an Internet connection to set up an account.
Facebook allows you to connect with people who are physically distant for free.  It doesn't matter whether your friends and family are on the other side of the city or the other side of the world.  As long as you have Facebook, there's no need to worry about long-distance phone charges or having a letter get lost in the mail!
If you have news to share, you can share it with everyone all in one post!
You can also choose with whom you want to share your information.  If you don't want to share something on Facebook for anyone to simply stumble upon, you can set it up so that only your friends can see it.  Facebook also has a private message function if you want to chat with a friend one-on-one.
Connect with new people. Join groups and connect with others around the world who share similar interests.
Connect with long-lost friends by using a simple search.  Facebook can also find them for you based on places that you've lived, worked, or gone to school, or by friends that you have in common.
Games. Facebook is all about connecting and having fun, and what’s more fun than playing a game with your friends?

Privacy can be tricky. By default, Facebook makes your information visible to any Facebook user who stumbles upon it.  Fortunately, it's fairly easy to tell Facebook to only show your information to friends, or to friends of friends.  We'll teach you how privacy works on Facebook and show you how to set up your account so that it won't be such a hassle.
Facebook is where a lot of information is shared, even the tiniest moments, and that can sometimes be annoying. We’ll show you how to set it up so you can choose whose posts you’d like to see. 
Everyone wants to be your “friend,” including the old high school bully. Luckily, you don’t have to add everyone who requests to be your friend.

The home page shows you how simple it is to get started.  Simply fill out the form with your basic information, and then click the green SIGN UP button at the bottom.

8. Changing Your Privacy Settings
Three levels of privacy
Why is privacy important on Facebook?
Imagine that you’re sitting at home, watching TV. A random stranger walks into your home, followed by another and another. How do you prevent these strangers from coming into your home uninvited? You close and lock the door. By doing so, it allows you to choose who to keep out and who to let in.
How do Facebook's privacy settings work?
Facebook’s privacy settings work in much the same way as the home security system in our introduction. They allow you to decide who does and does not get to see your information and activity on Facebook, such as your profile, status updates, comments, and events. There are four main sharing options: 
Only me: Anything shared with this option will only be visible to you.
Lists: You can create custom lists of friends with whom you may want to share certain information while hiding it from the rest of your friends. An example would be a list of Facebook friends that are family members.  Friends: The most common option. All of your friends on Facebook will have access to any information shared using this option.
Public: The least secure setting. Everyone on Facebook will be able to see any information that you share using this option, even if they’re not on your friends list.
