Acid-Base Reactions
2
Bronstead-Lowry Reactions
-Species that remain after a B-L acid has given up a proton is the conjugate base of the acid. -When a B-L base gains a proton, it is called a conjugate acid.
3
Strength Weaker acid + weaker base <-- stronger acid + stronger base The extent of the reaction depends on strength of acids and bases. Stronger acid + stronger base --> weaker acid + weaker base
4
Predicting Reactions Strengths of acids and bases can be compared to predict the outcome of a reaction.
5
Equilibrium Systems Bronstead-Lowry acid-base reactions are equilibrium systems, both forward and reverse reactions occur.
6
Questions What is it called when a base gives up a proton?
