Effects are wide and varied Have a high potential for abuse and addiction Narcotics are highly addictive because they change the chemistry of the brain: they decrease the perception of pain and alter the body’s reaction to pain

Marijuana/ Hash probably the most controversial illegal drug
Formally classified as both a hallucinogen and a depressant, marijuana and its derivatives are in a category all by themselves Comes from the cannabis plant – contains THC which changes mood, emotions, behaviour

Marijuana/ Hash Up to 20 times stronger than 30 years ago
Effects are varied: Euphoria, relaxation, altered time sense Paranoia, hallucinations, delusions Accumulates in fatty tissues, esp. brain & reproductive organs Risk psychological dependence, not physical addiction Small but persistent impairments of learning, memory, attention, thinking

Marijuana – and many drugs - affect each person differently. How they affect you depends on: - how much you use - how strong it is - how often you use it - whether you smoke it or eat it - your mood and what you expect to happen when you take it - whether you have drunk alcohol or used other drugs when you take it Gateway drug??
