1 Some notes for the corrections
To change the image on this slide, select the picture and delete it. Then click the Pictures icon in the placeholder to insert your own image. Things I noticed in your Emerson Assignments

2 The QUOTE: “In the woods, too, a man casts off his years; as the snake his slough, and at what period soever of life is always a child. In the woods is perpetual youth.” -Emerson

3 Think: How is the SNAKE (-) its skin = Man+woods (in forest)
So what is the metaphor? Think: How is the SNAKE (-) its skin = Man+woods (in forest)

4 NEXT: Annotation Remember: Your highlighted or underlined material should contain notes in the margin to elaborate. This is how you will remember WHY you chose it, and helps me know WHY you chose it. Often, you will be graded solely on those notes.

5

6 Vocabulary: You must provide context!!
Each sentence or picture you create must provide enough context clues to let me or the reader know what the word means just by reading the sentence!

7 VOCABULARY:THE GOOD, the Meh, AND THE BAD EXAMPLES
CAPITULATE: Verb. To Surrender. BAD: We capitulated in the war. So, what does capitulate mean? It could mean anything based on this sentence. Did we celebrate? Does capitulate mean party? Did we cry? Does capitulate mean cry? BETTER: We capitulated when we saw what was in store for our army. Okay, so that’s a bit better. We can infer. However, the goal of this type of exercise is for ME to know that YOU know what the word means. I’m like, 80% sure you get it. BEST: Our army was forced to capitulate to the enemy in order to save many lives and stop the fighting. Yes! Now I know YOU know what it means. You go, you vocab rock star!!

8 ANALYSIS OF THE TEXT: Generally, you did quite well for a first time. Be sure to follow CER format in each response for full credit in this type of assignment. CLAIM: YOUR POINT OR THESIS EVIDENCE: USUALLY FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE OR THE TEXT REASONING: HOW DO THE TWO CONNECT? Example: Emerson encourages self-reliance because it is the only way to make sure that a person is not a burden to others or to nature. He demonstrates this in the point “Then do not tell me, as a good man did today, of my obligation to put all poor men in good situations. Are they my poor?” (59). This means that it is not his fault they are poor, and so he shouldn’t have to take care of them. They should take care of themselves and not be a burden to him or anyone else.

9 OKAY: SO IF YOU WANT TO FIX THE WORK
ON A SEPARATE SHEET OF PAPER: YOUR FIRST AND LAST NAME If you want to fix just the quote response, copy your ORIGINAL response, and then a new one for me to re-grade. Vocabulary: Rewrite the sentence so that it is BEST. Submit your original along with the new. For Analysis: Tear off your analysis section, and highlight or star the sections you are re-doing or fixing. Attach to this new sheet.
