CAPITULATE: Verb. To Surrender. BAD: We capitulated in the war. So, what does capitulate mean? It could mean anything based on this sentence. Did we celebrate? Does capitulate mean party? Did we cry? Does capitulate mean cry? BETTER: We capitulated when we saw what was in store for our army. Okay, so that’s a bit better. We can infer. However, the goal of this type of exercise is for ME to know that YOU know what the word means. I’m like, 80% sure you get it. BEST: Our army was forced to capitulate to the enemy in order to save many lives and stop the fighting. Yes! Now I know YOU know what it means. You go, you vocab rock star!!

Example:
Emerson encourages self-reliance because it is the only way to make sure that a person is not a burden to others or to nature. He demonstrates this in the point “Then do not tell me, as a good man did today, of my obligation to put all poor men in good situations. Are they my poor?” (59). This means that it is not his fault they are poor, and so he shouldn’t have to take care of them. They should take care of themselves and not be a burden to him or anyone else.
