Why So Spicy? Nick Carboni SCI101- Introduction to the Sciences 11/29/2017
2
Why Am I Interested In This?
I just like trying really spicy food… It would be awesome to find the perfect substance to stop the heat so I can continue sampling other spicy food.
3
What Did I Do? I did a quick internet search to see what people say will neutralize the heat. I got ahold of 10 of the Carolina Reaper chips and started making a list from my internet search.
4
What Substances Will Neutralize Spicy Food?
Olive oil Alcohol Any dairy products Peanut Butter Butter Milk Chocolate
5
What Causes The Heat? Capsaicin reacts with VR1 receptors in the mouth and sends signals to the brain. VR1 receptors are usually used for thermoreception which is why the spicy sensation feels like heat.
6
What Did I Learn? Don’t trust the internet. The only substance that helped reduce the heat was milk. Everything else either made it worse immediately or had no effect.
7
Summary I found common substances that people said would work online. I ate the Carolina Reaper chip. I ate all of the random substances. I determined the internet lied to me.
