U.S. announces limit to refugees
2
The Trump administration will cap the number of refugees who will be allowed into the United States to 30,000 in the next fiscal year, a significant decline from the 45,000 ceiling set for this year. The announcement to slash the number of refugees for the second straight year was made in a brief statement by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday. The limitation comes at a time when the world is grappling with massive refugee flows, with more than 68 million displaced people around the globe. The reason for the lower ceiling according to Pompeo is because of the large number of individuals seeking asylum in our country, leading to a massive backlog of outstanding asylum cases and an ever increasing amount of money being spent on those cases. He said, “The magnitude of this challenge is unequaled in any other country.” Pompeo delivered his statement in the Treaty Room at the State Department (the State Department is located in the Harry S Truman Building, a few blocks away from the White House).

In Other News South Korean President Moon Jae-in arrived in North Korea today as the leaders of the two countries met for their third inter-Korean summit this year. The historic, three-day trip marks the first time since 2007 that a South Korean president has traveled to the North. During the summit, he and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will probably talk economic cooperation, North Korea's nuclear weapons program and formally ending the Korean War. Obviously, the war functionally ended 65 years ago, but a proper -- and formal -- peace between the two countries has remained elusive. Netflix and HBO reigned supreme at last night's Emmys. Netflix, which for the first time surpassed HBO in total nominations, left its mark on the ceremony, winning seven awards. HBO walked away with six awards. Two big moments were when Henry Winkler won his first Emmy -- after six nominations dating back more than 40 years -- for the HBO comedy "Barry” and when Betty White (96 years old and with eight Emmy Awards) was honored for her more than 80 years in show business, including several decades in television. SpaceX revealed Monday that Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa will be its first space tourist. Maezawa has chartered a flight aboard the company's Big Falcon Rocket, which is still being developed, for a slingshot trip around the Moon as soon as He's planning to take six to eight artists with him on the mission free of charge. "I want to share this experience and things with as many people as possible," Maezawa told a news conference. "So, I choose to go to the Moon with artists.“ The trip will take four or five days, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said at the event. Maezawa is a rock musician, online fashion mogul and, more recently, a high-rolling art collector. Maezawa made his fortune by building up Start Today, an e-commerce business that includes a popular online clothing site in Japan. A video presentation about him said he believes art can help usher in world peace. The Japanese billionaire has made a down payment for the mission, but the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
