Presence of Virus in Anammox Treated Sidestream Wastewater Aidan Foster and Dr. Ian Pepper University of Arizona RESEARCH PROGRESS REPORT UA-03-S2018 STATUS: Continuing, No Additional Funds Requested Relationship to Technology Roadmap: Municipal Water Use Practices and Wastewater Reuse Rationale: Anammox treatment of wastewater has been used infrequently and as such its effects on the fate of viruses (known to persist in these waters) has not been clearly assessed. Additionally, the water used to feed this system (centrate) has not been characterized for the presence of viruses. This provides a novel opportunity to assess the fate of virus through this treatment system and concurrently characterize this water stream. Approach: The WEST Center, in conjunction with Pima County Wastewater, have begun establishing multiple Anammox treatment systems utilizing centrate from Tres Rios Wastewater Treatment plant. Using these systems the fate of both human enteric and bacteriophages will be assessed by quantifying the viruses prior to and after treatment using both cultural and molecular methods. Key Deliverables: Objectives: Determine the incidence and fate of viruses through different Annamox treatment systems. Characterize the viral composition of the centrate. Scale-up of anammox treatment from batch experiments to intermediate field-scale Peer-review publication Accomplishments: Characterization of chemical and indigenous bacteriophage in the centrate. Cultural evaluation of indigenous bacteriophage though MBBR anammox treatment. Established an operational mid scale anammox reactor mirroring full scale application; remaining reactors are operational but not yet optimized. Project Duration: July 1, 2018 – June 30, 2019 Budget: No additional funds requested Water & Environmental Technology Center
